O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. The model was featured in a few commercials before moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. The career path O'Grady started her career as model for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She starred in the 1988 romantic comedic film, She's Having a Baby.
