O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was a high school student. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm for her performances. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. Judges were amazed by her performance and advised viewers to choose those who sing well, such as Melissa. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performances since then, never finished lower than the third place. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil beat Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was declared by the President Paul Martin immediately.
